This panel will highlight the scope of the gun violence epidemic in Chicago’s Latino communities, highlight existing efforts by community leaders to address this complex issue, and elevate the need for continued advocacy and funding, fresh policy solutions, and research.

ABOUT THE EVENT
As rates of gun violence have reached record highs across the country over the last few years, there is newfound energy and commitment at the local, state, and federal level to tackling the violence. In this environment, community violence intervention (CVI) has emerged as a central component of comprehensive violence prevention strategies in many cities. Chicago is one of several cities leading the movement to expand the reach and impact of community violence intervention through the development of CVI programs, partnerships, and coordinated approaches that are integrated into larger public safety efforts. As CVI becomes an increasingly dominant strategy, community and civic organizations are partnering with researchers to help enhance their work, and policymakers are looking to research-practice partnerships for answers on the impact of CVI initiatives and investments.
Building off the momentum from its inaugural Symposium, Corners’ second annual Symposium focuses on innovation in community violence intervention research, policy, and practice, and highlights emerging CVI initiatives in Chicago and across Illinois. The Symposium features several panels of leaders, policymakers, and practitioners who are spearheading innovative violence prevention efforts and incorporating Corners’ research and analyses into their work. Panelists will discuss their work and how it is helping strengthen the field. A featured data presentation from Corners will accompany each panel session.
Lunch will be available at 11:30 a.m. CT for in-person guests, with a reception to follow. The Symposium will be live streamed for virtual guests, and a recording will be shared following the event.
Arne Duncan, Managing Partner, Emerson Collective & Former U.S. Secretary of Education, will deliver opening remarks, CVI leaders and practitioners will share their work, and Corners will present some of its latest research findings.
