Michelle Shames

Michelle Shames is a PhD student in the Department of Sociology, where her research focuses on inequities in the criminal legal system. Prior to joining Northwestern, she worked as a research strategist in New York on matters related to policing, pretrial detention, and prison conditions. Her current research interests include police use of force, training, and community-police relations.

Featured Projects

Currently, our research focuses primarily on gun violence prevention and community violence intervention (CVI), policing practices, and public safety, and we are expanding into other areas that effect neighborhood health and well-being.
